For the purpose of reducing exhaust emission of heavy-duty diesel engine, authors made an experimental study of diesel combustion using a single cylinder test engine. The engine performance and exhaust emission have been measured by changing combustion chamber shapes under the condition of high boosting, wide range and high rate EGR. Authors have also changed swirl ratio on each different kind of combustion chamber shapes. Differences of exhaust emission especially smoke were occurred by these various combustion chamber shapes and swirl ratio conditions then the cleaner exhaust emissions are obtained.
