Antioxidant Effects of Citrus Flavonoid Consumption

Grapefruit juice is a rich source of nutrients and citrusflavonoids which are proposed to provide important healthbenefits. Many flavonoids are good antioxidants in vitro andthis property is one that is hypothesized to mediate theirbiological effects in vivo. In two studies we tested the effectsof citrus flavanones and grapefruit juice on lipid oxidation andthe antioxidant defense system in vivo. The first tested thedose-response effect of naringenin consumption in ratsadequate or deficient in vitamin E and selenium on growth andmultiple measures of antioxidant defense, lipid oxidation andoxidative stress. The second was a human intervention trial ofthree months in duration testing the effects of regularconsumption of grapefruit juice on antioxidant nutrient statusand oxidative stress in young adult women. No evidence ofantioxidant or pro-oxidant activity was observed, however, inrats inhibition of adipose accumulation was observed.
