CAILS: a prototype for a computer assisted iconic language system

摘要

The present paper presents CAILS, an experimental Computer Assisted Iconic Language System. Data about visual systems for representing semantic and design concepts is reviewed. Many of the limitations of previous attempts at developing an iconic language can be solved by using computer assistance. In CAILS, icons are used to denote lexical units. These icons appear with a symbol in the background to denote grammatical functions. Designed for interpersonal communication, this system functions with generally comprehensible visual referents. When properly used, CAILS produces 《iconic messages objects》 which may be presented to the intended recipient.
