For P1 to P3 hybrid vehicles with east/west engine configurations as well as for battery electric vehicles, AWD is generally realized by electrification of both axles. However, the decentralised generation of drive power by such a "dual motor concept" has a negative effect on vehicle efficiency and is also comparatively cost-intensive. A promising alternative for electrified vehicles is the intelligent all-wheel drive system with "ActiveConnect" from GKN, which mechanically connects the front and rear axles. The ActiveConnect technology enables the drag torque of the drivetrain to be reduced by engaging the all-wheel system only when required. In contrast to the common dual-motor concepts in electrified vehicles, the mechanical drivetrain architecture enables the entire drive power to be provided by a single drive unit. In combination with the ActiveConnect function, this results in a number of significant advantages in terms of vehicle efficiency, costs, vehicle mobility and performance as well as low development and integration effort for hybrid vehicles in the form of P1 to P3.
