We are creating an online environment helping higher education students to develop their skills for ICT supported work tasks. A hybrid course for undergraduate students at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) is used to test the principles of this environment. It appears that a competence framework is central for the design and implementation of our environment, to enhance its adaptive feature. The present article is focused on the verification of this hypothesis. In the article, we describe the conceptual ideas this competence framework is based on, as well as its structure and contents. Afterwards we focus on a test made with the students where we asked them to use the framework to help them evaluating one of the works they did during the course activity. The analysis gives interesting results showing that the framework helps to visualize differences between students and/or between competences for a single student. Consequently it seems to facilitate decision making about adapted individual learning paths, so that the students can improve their competences regarding the student’s job.
