Peri-operative Management in TKA

Total knee aithroplasty (TKA) has become the standard of care for patients with end-stage knee osteoarthritis (OA) and is one of the most frequently performed Orthopaedic procedures. Better knowledge of some complications that may occur in the TKA peri-operative period as they are infection, blood loss, thromboembolic events, and pain might allow for better management of the procedure from start to finish. The aim of this chapter is to review peri-operative management in TKA surgery, with special interest placed on prophylactic measures to prevent infection (pre-operatively, intra-operatively and post-operatively), the management of blood loss so as to reduce allogenic transfusion, the contemporary recommendations relative to prophylaxis of thromboembolic disease. It will also cover pain management in TKA as well as the evidence with regard to rehabilitation after TKA surgery. The decrease in these complications rates and better rehabilitation programs have led to better results, shorter hospital stays and a decrease in the costs of TKA surgery over the last decades. This chapter is a compendium of the current knowledge of TKA drawn from the current literature as well as the experience of the authors.
