Summary: Slow and incomplete dissolution of commercial meropenem powders for injection have been reported recently in clinical setting in Thailand. It was possibly associated with high degree of powder agglomeration. Meropenem powders were undergone grin-ding process to reduce the sizes to facilitate its dissolution rate which could partially lead to powder agglomeration. Sodium carbonate was dry mixed wim meropenetm powder as solubilizing-aid agent and pH stabilizer. The application of uniquely small granules of sodium carbonate in the innovator product seems to help prevent the agglomeration of meropenem powder which leads to rapid dissolution and minimal contaminated particles after reconstitution.
