摘要

The aim of this paper is to consider the significance of describing particular languages in SFL. A particular language is thought to have the meaning potential that realises the context of culture where it is spoken. In this way, the Kyoto Grammar develops the particular grammar for Japanese. Although it is said that systems and meaning potentials are different from language to language, it is also necessary to point out the difference from the lexicogrammatical perspectives. In order to discuss this point, some of the process types in both Japanese and English will be contrasted to show that the meaning of the processes are not equal despite their similarity in experience, and that they realise different meaning potentials. The different lexicogrammatical behaviours can be attributed to differences in meaning potential and system, which can be in turn attributed to the context of culture. In this regard, it will be suggested that different descriptions are necessary in SFL for different languages.
