We investigated the alphabetic reading skills of Japanese English as foreign language (EFL) readers. Two experiments were administered: one used the methodology of Brown and Deavers (1999) to examine the effect of EFL proficiency level on naming nonwords featured in regularity (Experiment 1); and the other used the methodology of Fletcher-Flinn and Thompson (2004) to examine Japanese EFL readers' alphabetic knowledge, which is essential to reading English (Experiment 2).
