An assortment of novel flavonolignans have been profiled in extracts of corn stover using UHPLC-MS. Unlike in hardwoods, the flavone tricin is proposed to be a key initiator of cell wall lignification in all grasses studied. Extracts of AFEX-treated biomass contain the same flavonolignans plus novel amino-flavonolignans that represent an ammonia sink.
