This new UHPLC-MS-MS assay for the quantitative analysis of epicatechin and its metabolites in human serum is 5-fold faster than the previous LC-MS-MS assay and has similar robustness, accuracy and reproducibility. Both methods are able to detect and quantify epicatechin sulfates and methylated sulfates in human serum. Note that methylated epicatechin sulfate metabolites had not been detected previously. The higher throughput of UHPLC-MS-MS will reduce the costs of analysis when large numbers of human serum samples must be measured for epicatechin metabolites.
