In this study, two boron-containing reagents, TMB and DEMB, were successfully used for differentiation between phosphorylated, sulfated, and unmodified carbohydrates through ion-molecule reaction in the gas phase. TMB in the positive ion mode (sodiated carbohydrates) produced a product corresponding to the addition of 72 Da with phosphorylated carbohydrates, 104 Da addition with sulfated carbohydrates, and no reaction with unmodified carbohydrates. TMB in the negative ion mode resulted in additions of 40 Da and 58 Da with phosphorylated carbohydrates, no reaction with sulfated carbohydrates, and +40 Da and +72 Da product peaks with unmodified carbohydrates.
