AUTOLOGOUS PERIPHERAL BLOOD STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION FOR THE TREATMENT OF CANINE LYMPHOMA

Canine lymphoma is one of the most common malignant tumors of dogs (up to 25% of all cancers) and it is the most common hematopoietic tumor of the dog (83%). The incidence of lymphoma has been reported to approach 2.4% in susceptible older animals, with an annual incidence rate of 1.5 per 100,000 for dogs less than 1 year of age and 84 per 100,000 dogs in the 10 to 11 year old group. The notion that the incidence of canine lymphoma is increasing is supported by a report documenting an increasing caseload of canine lymphoma patients presenting to 20 U.S. veterinary institutions from 1987 to 1997. In the veterinary literature, canine high grade B-cell lymphoma reportedly accounts for approximately 70% to 75% of canine cases. The treatment of choice typically involves sequential multi-drug chemotherapy using CHOP or L-VCAP based protocols. The median survival time of T and B-cell canine lymphoma patients is 7-9 months and 12-14 months, respectively, with an expected 2-yr. survival of-25% and an overall cure rate of less than 5% when considering B-cell lymphoma. Death is uniformly the result of recrudescent disease that is resistant to conventional chemotherapeutic drugs. Although not definitively proven, it is now generally accepted that canine nodalB-cell lymphoma is a heterogeneous population of B-cell neoplasms, mirroring the human non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) experience.
