Comparison of Surgical Outcomes of Thoracic Esophageal Carcinoma Between Two Referral Centers in Japan and China

Introduction: Comparison was made between two referral centers, Shizuoka Cancer Center Hospital (SCC) in Japan and Shnghai Chest Hospital (SCH) in China. Methods: A total of 97 patients (47 from SCC and 50 from SCH) of thoracic esophagus treated by surgery were retrospectively reviewed. Results: SCC preferred three-field lymphadenectomy, on the other hand, SCH did two-field. Morbidity rate in SCC was higher than in SCH. There were no significant differences in gender, clinical stage, mortality, residual tumor and accuracy of preo-perative staging. Conclusions: Three-field lymphadenectomy may cause more complications compared with two-field lymphadenectomy. To clarify the differences of surgery, the analysis of long-term survival rates are needed.
