Enhancing Efficiency and Effectiveness of Online Asynchronous Support Using Case-Based Reasoning Within an Online Learning Environment

This chapter is generally concerned with the current nature of online learning asynchronous support within third-level colleges. It is specifically con-cerned with evaluating the current use or lack of use of asynchronous online learn-ing support tools and evaluating methods of enhancing asynchronous online support, by employing Case-Based Reasoning (CBR). This chapter constitutes a contribution to the issues of pedagogical quality, with reference to effectiveness and efficiency of online learning support technologies. It argues that students must assume greater control of monitoring and managing the cognitive and contextual aspects of their learning. The significance of this chapter is that it emphasises the need for lecturers to take more responsibility to provide structure and guidance that will encourage and support students assuming increased control of their learning. The fundamental challenge presented within this chapter, is to create and sustain a quality online learning environment of increased value for lecturers and students, using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to explore the economic value of reusable online support, thus enhancing the overall effectiveness and efficiency of online asynchronous support.
