Awareness, memory formation and dreaming are commonly-reported following general anaesthesia. In this review, awareness is defined as "post-operative recall of events occurring during general anaesthesia"(l); amnesic wakefulness is defined as "responsiveness during general anaesthesia without postoperative recall"(l) and dreaming is defined as "any experience (excluding awareness) that a patient is able to recall postoperatively, which he or she thinks occurred during general anaesthesia and which he or she thinks is dreaming"(2).
