NT-proBNP: SUMMARY OF A CANINE COHORT STUDY

Cardiac Biomarkers represent a new-and potentially powerful tool in the assessment of patients with cardiovascular diseas As with any new biomarker, questions are raised about the utility of such biomarkers in answering a number of clinical questionsCan the marker help definitively diagnose the disease? What is their utility in staging the disease? Do they respond to successful therapeutic intervention, or conversely do they predict a failure of therapeutic efficacy? The question most often posed tothe clinicia is that of expectations regarding both quantity and quality of life. In this presentation we will discuss several of these questions. The cornerstone of any assessment of biomarker response is the definition of a normal reference range. Several cardiac biomarkers have been made commercially available to veterinarians. Troponin I, NTproANP, and latterly NTproBNP have been or are currently available as serological tests. Many publications exist on the utility of these markers. Review of these publications may be confusing when trying to define an appropriate reference range or defining appropriate interpretive criteria.
