This paper describes the development and evaluation of a virtual classroom for the topic Flowchart in a foundation subject. The objective of the Virtual Classroom (VC) is to provide an alternative teaching and learning approach to optimize students' involvement and interest while helping them to achieve learning outcomes. The VC is a comprehensive learning environment in electronic form, consisting of four main modules, namely e-notes, interactive animated examples, e-tutorial and online discussion board. The VC is accessible via the World Wide Web. E-notes incorporate navigational aids to provide self-paced learning while interactive animated examples provide demonstration and route students through instructional procedures to deepen understanding on the subject. E-tutorial provides interactive exercises to train students in analytical and application skills. The discussion board provides a communication channel for discussion. The VC has been tested on a group of students learning program flowchart in the subject Introduction to Computing. Test results show that the VC approach has motivated students and improved their problem solving skills. The VC is regarded as an interesting student-centered approach that is more effective than conventional teaching and learning methods. Computer functionalities like interactivity, animation, accessibility and usability are the keys to achieving an effective virtual classroom.
