This article describes the opportunities opened up for the powertrain by the 48-Volt vehicle electrical system. As an initial step, motivation for a higher voltage in the vehicle's electrical system is defined, after which the layout and components of a dual-voltage system are explained. The central focus of this article, as well as outlining the advantages of electrification in tandem with the internal combustion engine and the opportunity to adopt an electric biturbo concept, describes the Audi iHEV 48V mild hybrid concept, which is based on a dual-voltage vehicle electrical system and makes maximum use of the advantages it offers for the powertrain. To make the picture more complete, the benefits of the dual-voltage electrical system for the vehicle as a whole are then discussed. Reference is made to the scope offered in the physical vehicle electrical system and suspension control systems areas, and at the end of the article conclusions are formulated.
