A Porphyrin-based electronic nose system for meat safety

Thin films of Cu(ll) tetrakis(p-tert-butylphenyl)porphyrin (CuP) and 4-n-octaethyl-porphine ruthenium (II) carbonyl (RuOEPCO) were used as sensing materials for optical detection ofethanol at 100 ppm concentration. Thin films were deposited on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate and characterized using Atomic Force Microscopy. A prototype configuration of an optical sensing system in reflectance mode was designed and developed to evaluate the change in the thin film reflectance in the presence of ethanol vapor between 400 to 800 nm. It was found that CuP and RuOEPCO were sensitivity towards the 100 ppm ethanol vapor. Further, the change in the reflectance is reversible and multi-cycle sensitive i.e. thin films gave similar response to ethanol vapor during the repetitive measurements.
