Analysis of horse skin emanations revealed compounds similar to those present on other mammals, including humans and bovines, e.g. the aldehydes such as nonanal and decanal are common to all animals we have studied previously and could possibly play a role in insect attraction to host odors. Among skin emanations of animals studied thus far, horses had a unique pattern of aldehydes. Specifically, undecanal was the most abundant followed by nonanal, which is normally most abundant in animal skin samples. Chemical derivatization of samples will be performed to obtain the identity of the compound that produced the peak at 13.39 min. The mass spectrum for this peak does not match properly with any of the library mass spectra. All of the standards that we have analyzed do not match the mass spectrum of this compound nor do they match the retention time of the associated peak.
