Every coal-fired power project begins with a good understanding of the fuel. This is even more critical for a waste-fuel-fired power project. Some believe a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler can burn virtually anything; however, just like any other boiler, a CFB works best with fuel consistent in heating value and other properties, This is demonstrated by reviewing lessons learned from previous CFB projects. In the development of the 525 MW Greene Energy Resource Recovery Project in Nemacolin, Pennsylvania, a fuel and limestone test program was developed and performed to establish a clear understanding of the fuel. The conceptual design was developed to accommodate the fuels and limestone as their property data was became available.
