The main requirements of a spindle bearing are that it should enable the spindle to rotate smoothly with a minimum of vibration or deflection under load and with the least possible wear or rise in temperature. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of tribological properties of lubricant on the reliability of spindle bearings of grinding machines. Spindle bearings operate under a wide range of operating conditions e.g. bearing temperature, speed, load and presence or otherwise of moisture. Plain bearings as spindle bearings exhibit conformal surfaces that are the surfaces fit into each other with a high degree of geometrical conformity, so that the load is carried over a relative large area. Lubrication is the significant importance to the prevention of spindle bearings from tribological processes and wears which cause failure of machines. The experimental investigation of the influence of lubricating oils on the tribological behavior of spindle bearings has been carried out on grinding machines at a metalworking factory.
