The present study analyses MMP2 and MMP9 activity in 30 varicose vein and 6 normal vein samples and appreciates the extent to which their activation correlates with the oxidative stress markers. Using the zymographic method MMP were detected and the nitric oxide and oxidative stress markers were assayed by biochemical methods.. The results obtained revealed a high activity of MMP 2 in the varicose veins, Lipid peroxide level, the concentration of carbonylated proteins and catalase activity were increased in the varicose veins as compared with normal veins Nitrite content was low in the varicose tissue as against normal venous tissue, These results indicate the excessive release of free radicals in varicose disease with a decreased bioavailability of the nitric oxide, suggesting the possible role of redox imbalance in the activation of matrix proteases.
