Often seats are assigned to student groups so that group members can sit closely and participate in classroom activities cooperatively. In a large classroom the student groups with lower quality seats may have negative feelings. Seats may be re-assigned at the middle of the semester to give groups with the worst seats better seating positions and vice versa. The manual process of re-assigning seats is tedious and time-consuming, and the results may often be less than satisfactory. We propose an integer programming-based optimization model that will address the issues by re-assigning seats as fairly as possible.
