A symposium of Nobel Laureates is inherently illustrious because of the great achievements that the Nobel Prize signifies. This particular Symposium is illustrious also for a second reason: it marks the first time that the International Conference in Atomic Physics (ICAP) is being held in Brazil. For more than half a century, ICAP has brought together scientists from around the world to discuss advances at the frontiers of atomic physics. Unlike many international conferences, ICAP is not held under the auspices of a scientific society but is arranged informally, hosted at institutions where there are active groups in atomic physics and organizers who have the confidence of the atomic physics community. Thus, in some sense this conference marks the debut of the Brazilian atomic physics community as an important presence in the world of atomic physics. Such an event is the occasion for celebration, and one can think of no more appropriate way to celebrate than to present a symposium of talks by the field's Nobel Laureates.
