Cancer chemopreventive effects elicited by natural dietary compounds are due at least in part to the induction of cellular defence systems, including the detoxifying and antioxidant enzymes as well as the inhibition of anti-inflammatory and anti-cell growth signalling pathways culminating in apoptosis and/or cell cycle arrest. Apoptosis is a defined type of cell death and differs from traditional cell death, necrosis. Many recent studies have indicated that anticancer drugs or cancer chemopreventive agents act through the induction of apoptosis to prevent tumor promotion, progression, and the occurrence of cellular inflammatory responses other than necrosis. It is now apparent that many natural dietary compounds with promise for human consumption can also preferentially inhibit the growth of tumor cells by targeting one or more signaling intermediates leading to induction of apoptosis.
