The IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme has undertaken an exercise to identify the key barriers to the implementation of CO_2 capture and storage. One key barrier identified was a lack of rules and standards for CO_2 capture and storage. To address this barrier IEA GHG has reviewed information on available standards for CO_2 capture and storage worldwide. This review has shown that for CO_2 transmission by pipeline, there are currently standards in place that cover the necessary issues regarding the transportation of CO_2. In contrast, it was found that there were very few applicable existing standards relating to CO_2 storage. The review, therefore, clearly identified that there was a need for guidelines to be developed in the area of geological storage of CO_2. The paper then presents details of a set of draft guidelines for CO_2 storage in geological reservoirs that aim to start a debate on the way forward in developing international guidelines.
