Finite element model correlation and updating can sometimes prove to be a formidable task. This process is generally conducted once testing has been completed when there is little chance for improving the quality of test data to make the correlation process any easier. This can result in many iterations on the finite element model to try improving the comparison to the test results, when the test data may not be sufficient. The delays in obtaining a correlated finite element model increase the cost and schedule of the overall project. There are several steps which can be taken during the preparation for a ground vibration test or modal survey which can greatly improve the chances of success during model correlation. These steps can also improve the chances of success during the testing process, allowing improved data quality and fidelity. This paper discusses some approaches which can be used in preparing for a modal survey which can show a substantial payback, such as fewer iterations in achieving agreement between test and analysis, for the analyst attempting to update the finite element model.
