Noise sources on ships, such as centrifugal pumps and valves, generate sound predominately in the lower frequency range below 2 kHz. Common mufflers are unable to reduce this kind of noise efficiently. This is why a new muffler has been designed which fulfils this need and additionally operates system pressure independent. The new muffler also has a low flow resistance and a compact design. In the paper at hand, an analytical model is presented for calculating the transmission loss of the muffler. To be able to predict the noise reduction of the muffler in a piping system, a system model is introduced as well. With this model it is possible to optimize the geometric dimensions of the muffler and also select a good material for the absorbing parts. Several experimental studies are presented to validate the proposed analytical approach.
