Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System: Guidance, Reporting, and Communication

The Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) was developed by the Am- erican College of Radiology (ACR), with the cooperation of several other organizations, in an effort to standardize mammographic reporting (1-3). In turn, improvements in the clarity of written reports and in communication among the radiologist, the patient, and the other physicians involved in the breast care of the patient were to follow. The ensuing discussion provides an update of BI-RADS, with special emphasis on recent changes designed to further upgrade the quality of reporting and communication of results of breast imaging studies (4). The recent changes are summarized in a special guidance chapter in the new fourth edition of the ACR BI-RADS Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System: Breast Imaging Atlas (4) (hereafter referred to as the BI-RADS Atlas).
