Tribological Properties of TiAlSiN Film Coated by AIP Equipment onto SKD61 Substrate

TiAlSiN film was coated by Arc Ion Plating onto high-speed tool steel, SKD61. The wear behaviour of film against bearing steel, SUJ2, ball was investigated using the ball on disk testing machine under the condition of load of 10N, sliding distance of 5000m, and sliding speed of 250mm/s. Surface roughness of film was changed by hand polishing into four types of surface roughness. Tribological performance for the SKD61 specimen coated by TiAlSiN film was compared with that of uncoated specimen. Wear track of film was observed using a scanning electron microscope and optical microscope. The wear resistance of SKD61 was significantly improved by coating of TiAlSiN film, regardless of surface roughness. However, the wear rate of ball was greater for the unpolished film than for the polished film because many droplets existed on the unpolished film.
