We investigated the effects of the selective 5-HT4 receptor antagonist SB203186 onatrial effective refractory period (ERP), monophasic action potential (MAP), ERP/MAP ratio and time to sinus rhythm restoration (TSRR), before and following 6 hours of atrial fibrillation (AF). We studied 20 pigs, 10 SB203186-treated and 10 controls. ERP, MAP and ERP/MAP ratio were assessed at baseline, following SB203186 (in treated) or placebo (in controls) infusion and after 6 hours of AF. SB203186 prolonged MAP and ERP in sinus rhythm. Following 6 hours of AF, ERP and MAP shortening and TSRR prolongation were less in SB203186-treated pigs than in controls.
