Among many factors that contribute to the complexity and uncertainty involved in the design of smoke control systems, ambient wind is more likely to have an important impact on a natural smoke ventilation system for a loosely constructed building or station. Possible wind effects on smoke control systems have been recognized by several codes, for example, BS5588 and ASHRAE. There have been few attempts to study the wind effects on smoke motion and smoke control system. In this paper, a CFD (field model) method is used to study the wind effects on a smoke natural ventilation system of a partially open transit station. The study has demonstrated that the wind effect can be significant, and by using a CFD approach, the effects of wind can be taken into account in the design of smoke natural ventilation systems.
