This paper is a case study that outlines the different types of structural analysis that have been employed by Alvis Vickers Ltd. in the design and manufacture of the Boxer Multi-Role Armoured Vehicle (MRAV). Traditional Finite Element Analysis has been used for the linear-elastic structural analysis using the ANSYS1 Finite Element System. FE Weld2 software uses the 'already solved' finite element model to calculate and organise weld size requirements and other design parameters. Finally, non-linear structural analysis has been carried out on the Boxer Mission Module for items such as the rear ramp, hatches and doors to solve structural deformations and 3-D motion dynamics in the time domain. The software adopted for this type of analysis is FEDEM3.
