The Role of HPV in VIN

In 1912 John Bowen described a precancerous dermatosis on the gluteal region of a thirty-year-old man. The lesion was painful and itchy and on examination turned out to be multifocal; it recurred several times after local therapy. The patient was followed for 29 years during which time the lesion did not progress to an invasive cancer (1, 2). Bowen described: "histologically...abundant evidence of cells not having undergone the process of cornirication, but showing nuclei surrounded by membranes of clear spaces". Today these cells would be classified as koilocytes. In 1922 Hudelo was the first to describe a similar lesion on the vulva of a forty-year-old woman (3). In total 159 cases of Bowen's disease of the vulva have been described up until 1972 (4).
