This paper presents the research process followed in order to gain understanding of the proboem context of the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) sector. The process started with a literature review of the existen research of SMEs, from where two main issues which dominate most of the resarch about smaller enterprieses were identified: 1. That SMEs share a set of common characteristics in a world-wide basis. 2. That those small enterprises that are able to survie and growth are the ones that maximise their contribution to society in terms of employment generation and wealth distribution.
