Swine influenza virus (SIV) is a common respiratory virus affecting pigs and is an important contributor to the porcine respiratory disease complex. The H1N1 and H3N2 viruses are currently the predominant subtypes found in U.S. swine herds. Due to theshort incubation period, the primary immune response to SIV infection fails to prevent the clinical signs of respiratory disease. Therefore in order to prevent disease, effective immunity should be induced in advance of infection by vaccination. The objective of our study was to analyze the efficacy and immune response induced by vaccination with 2 doses of a bivalent H1N1/H3N2 SIV vaccine followed by experimental challenge with homologous strains of either H1N1 or H3N2 SIV.
