Comparison of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) commercial vaccine efficacy

Porcine circovirus has been described as an important viral pathogen in the swine population. This single-stranded circular DNA virus is described as nonenvel-oped with an icosahedral symmetry. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) was discovered in the late 1990s as a virulent strain associated with a disease syndrome known as post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Clinical signs associated with this disease are drastic weight loss, decreased skin pallor, respiratory difficulty, diarrhea, and increased mortality/morbidity post-weaning. PCV2 is described as an immunosuppressive agent which causes lymphoid depletion and although PCV2 is required to cause PMWS, by itself it may not cause the disease.
