A COMPARATIVE FIELD STUDY OF THE EFFICACY OF CEFQUINOME AND AMOXYCILLIN AGAINST ACUTE MENINGITIS OF WEANED PIGLETS

Meningitis caused by S. suis has emerged as one of the most significant diseases of modern, high producing piggeries, with a large economic significance and a worldwide distribution (3). S. suis meningitis is most commonly seen in pigs shortly after weaning (2). Many antibiotics used for the treatment of S.suis meningitis are becoming less effective, due to increasing antibiotic resistance (1). Cefquinome is a fourth generation cephalosporin with low protein binding and a broad spectrum of activity,including S. suis. It was already found effective in the treatment of experimetally induced S.suis meningitis (4). Cefquinome (Cobactan~R 2.5 %) is licensed for the treatment of other diseases of pigs in the EU.
