Back in 1995, e-learning was called online learning - not least because the "e" prefix had not yet attached itself to every noun in the English language. It was also rather different in its incarnation, consisting predominantly of online help and computer based training, and was rightly considered an IT issue. Things have changed. Today, we can deliver individualised content to anyone, anytime, on nearly any topic. We can conduct online collaborative classes and help sessions. If e-learning was the vision, technology has lived up to its end of the deal. But desoite the sophistication of e-learning technology, technology alone will not enable an organisation to realise the full benefits of e-learning. Organisations need to use business strategy as their starting point, because it answers the why of e-learning.
