CHOICE AND VALUES

For the last three hundred years, science has been driven by logic -- and logic is not reasonable. By which, I mean it is not rational. Rational means making ratios, compromises. Rationality is not all or none - logic is. In addition to being rational, we need to take into account paradox. Matte-Bianco pointed out that to be reasonable, you have to make distinctions. Many feelings are unreasonable in the sense that they are paradoxical. An excellent illustration of paradox and nonrationality is the concept of infinity. A line of infinite length divided gives rise to two lines of infinite length; therefore one equals two. Parenthetically, we males experience this sort of thinking from our spouses all the time.
