Sulfide layers with a certain thickness on the surface of the Cr12MoV samples that had been nitrided were formed by S-C-N plasma multifold composite treatment at different temperature, time and atmosphere. The properties, microstructure and adhesion were detailedly investigated by light optical microscopy, SEM, EPA and homemade Scratch Tester. The results show that the adhesion strength between the sulfide layer and substrate was influenced by temperature and sulfurous atmosphere. Appropriate CS{sub}2 atmosphere and upper temperature is prone to form a compound layer with strong adhesion strength.
