Industrial pollution and its impact on corrosion and corrosion mitigation practices

This paper provides an overview of the impact of industrial atmospheric pollution on corrosion, and corrosion mitigation procedures in Australia over the last 40 years. It reflects on the great changes, which have taken place in terms of air quality, and the influence of those changes on corrosion and corrosion mitigation practices. It aims to provide some insight into changes that might be anticipated in the next few decades. The paper discusses the impact of reductions in air particulates, sulphur dioxide and photochemical smog, as well as the demise of lead, chromates, many volatile organic compounds and other toxic or otherwise hazardous constituents in paint. It also reflects on the developing problem of atmospheric carbon dioxide.
