Industrial pollution and its impact on corrosion and corrosion mitigation practices

One could arguably be excused for surmising that the corrosivity of the atmosphere in our cities has remained essentially unchanged over the last half century and that we have learnt little in that time to assist us to make informed decisions about the corrosion and corrosion protection of our infrastructure. Indeed, it is only in pausing to reflect on the changes in air quality, our knowledge of the environment and on corrosion mitigation practices 50 years ago, that the cahnges since then become obvious. This paper looks back on some of the key changes that have occurred and reflects on the changes yet to come.
