DNA polymorphism in salt-tolerant somaclones of sugarcane cultivar F36-819 was studied. RAPD analysis of six salt-tolerant clones, regenerated from calli adapted to high-salt medium, showed a DNA profile distinct from that of the orginal genotype. A unique DNA fragment of 995 bp found only in salt-tolerant clones showed sequence similarity to genes involved in stress tolerance. This result suggests that somaclones could be used to identify molecular markers related to environmental stresses such as salinity in sugarcane.
