Teaching machine design has always been a difficult matter because of the large variety of competencies and knowledge required. The major difficulty is to combine the following two important aspects: knowledge related to machinery such as machine properties and machine design (combination of knowledge and skills). Due to the increase in knowledge, it has becoming nearly impossible for a student to learn all that they need before being able to design a machine. Furthermore, today, the acquisition of skills is becoming as important as the acquisition of knowledge. As a consequence, we decided to modify the curriculum of Machine design from classical lectures to a Problem Based Learning approach This paper starts with the initial (conventional) approaches, the second section then describes the new approach, and section three discusses the advantages and drawbacks of the new approach compared to the conventional one.
