We have measured the critical field strength of the high-lying Rydberg states 31s~2[3/2]_2 and 29d~2[3/2)_2 of krypton using mass-separated collinear fast atom beam laser spectroscopy. The results for the critical field strengths are F_c = 0.525kV/cm and F_c = 0.620kV/cm, respectively. A comparison with results from the saddle-point ionization model is made.
