Mass Spectroscopy for the Pathologist: Application in Cancer Diagnostics and Biomarker Discovery

Disease endpoints remain critical hallmarks in evaluating disease state. For example considerable value has been realized from managing patients by coupling therapy decisions to tumor size in cancer, and to CD4 T cell count in patients with HIV/AIDS.Physiologic surrogates of disease have value in disease diagnosis, classification, prognosis and treatment outcome prediction. This is motivating considerable growth of the disease bio-marker discovery effort. Therefore, discovery biomarker research is active in a variety of diseases such as infections, neurodegeneration, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies are expected to help guide combinatorial therapies and lead to recognition of new pharmacologic targets.
