The focus of this paper is the way models and experimental analysis are presented in undergraduate and graduate engineering courses. Specifically, we have found that although students easily pick up the basic language of mechanics, they often miss the big picture as to why experiments are conducted in the first place, and what is the relationship between experiments, models, and their own work. Some classroom examples are presented.
